In the name of God Amen. The 28th day of September in the year of our Lord 1641. I

John Erle of the pish of Froyle in the County of South yeoman being sick of body but of

sounde minde and memory thanks be given unto God Do make and constitute this my

last will and Testamt. in manner and forme followinge. That is to say first I bequeath my

soule unto the hands of Lord Jesus Christ my blessed Saviour and Redeemer trusting in

God’s mercy and by the Meritts of our Lord Jesus Christ to obtain remission of all my

synnes and everlastinge life Amen. Next I bequeathe my body to the earth to be buried

in Christian buriall (1 word deleted) in the Church or Churchyard of Froyle aforesaid

accordinge to the discretion of my Executors wishes In hope of a glorious resurrection at

the last day amen. Item I give unto the church of Froile twenty shillings. Item I give unto

the poore of the pish of Froile five pounds to be paid at the nativity of our Lord which

shall be in 1643 to remayne to the wife of the poor. Item I give and bequeath unto the

poor of Farringdon twenty shillings to be paid each year after my decease. Item I give

and bequeath unto Robert Carter five pounds to be paid 12 months after my decease.

Item I give and bequeath to John Erle my kinsman forty shillings to be paid six years

after my decease. Item I give and bequeath to my third grandchildren which are my god

children to each of them five pounds the eldest to be paid his 5£: five years after my

decease. The second six years after and the third to be paid his 5£: 7 years after my

decease. Then I give unto my other grandchildren being nine in number twenty pounds

to be equally divided betweene them and to be paid tenne years after my decease. If

any of them shall happen to decease his naturall life before the appointed tyme of

payment that then my will is his or her pounds shall be divided equally amonge all the

rest that survive and remayne. Item I give and bequeath to John Erle my other Servant

the sonne of Wydow Erle of ?Worthy twenty shillings to be paid six years after my

decease. Item I give and bequeath unto my sonne John Erle of Farringdon fifty pounds

to be paid two years after my decease. Item I give unto my son Robert Erle one

hundred pounds to be paid unto him as soone as the lease of the farme of Hussies shall

be revised ( 4 words deleted). And if it shall happen that the sayd Robert Erle shall

decease his life before the said Lease be revised that the sayd Robert shall so have to

dispose of the said hundred pounds as he shall think fit. Item I give and bequeath unto

Emme Erle my wife tenn pounds as and to be paid unto her quarterly if she shall at any

time cease to live out of the Families of the sayd Robert and William my sonnes. Item I

give unto my sayd wife tenn pounds to dispose of at her will which shall be paid unto

her wheresoever she shall remain or require the same. Item I give and bequeath unto

our ............... ............... ............ forty shillings. Item I give and bequeath to my lovinge

neighbours Robert Balden and Edward Fielder to each of them twenty shillings. Item I

give and bequeath unto my son Edward Erle corne enough as all kynde of grayne to

sow his Copie hold ( lately fined) for his yeere. Item I give unto Elizabeth Creswell my

sister forty shillings yearly during her life to be paid unto her by ten shillings the quarter.

Item I constitute and ordayne Robert Erle and William Erle my naturall sons joynt

Executors of this my last will and Testament provided always that if either of my sayd

Executors decease before the other that it shall be lawfull for him to give and to dispose

of their hundred pounds out of the stock (belonging to them both) of the will. But if it

shall happen that the said Robert Erle first depart his life that then it shall be lawfull for

the sayd Robert to give and bequeath the full sum of foure hundred pounds as he shall

think fitt if either of them decease before the lease be revised. And I intreat my lovinge

neighbours and trusted friends Robert Balden and Edward Fielder yeomen of the pish

of Froyle a-fore sayd to be Overseers of this my last will and Testament duly to be

executed and fulfilled. In witnesss whereof I have hereunto set my hand the 28th day of

September in the year of of our Lord 1641/. the mark of John Erle
